| | | Re: Pond photos Good to see the photos - is this pond the one you referred to in several recent threads, or is it a different one? It looks like a pretty natural woodland pond - apparently manmade from the shape of it, but essentially a wild habitat and quite likely providing a habitat for quite a range of creatures (many of which are likely to be pretty small).
Regarding management, basically I'd leave it alone and I certainly wouldn't start carrying out potentially damaging activities such as silt/leaf removal, introducing plants/fish/other animals or anything like that.
The main thing I would do is to remove any rubbish/litter that many have been dumped in/around the pond (if there is any), and to check there aren't any possible sources of pollution. For instance, in Photo410 there are some barrels (?) beside the pond, so check these aren't a threat. Also, if there are any pheasant feeders nearby then it would be best not to have those too near the pond as well.
The only other management you might consider (perhaps) is a bit of cautious recoppicing of one or two of the trees around the pond. This is not necessarily a good idea though, as too much light could be detrimental (seeing as it's a naturally shady pond). If you did do this, you'd need to take it very slowly (perhaps one tree one year, and another a few years later, to avoid a sudden change in the conditions).
Overall, though, it would be much better to observe this one and study it how it is, rather than trying to modify it.
If you were interested in a more stereotypical pond (with lots of plants etc.), I think you'd be better looking to make a small garden pond if that's possible, rather than trying to alter this one. |

| | | Re: Pond photos I'd agree with King Edwards recommendations. The wood appears to have had some management in past years due to the selected coppice growth under standard oaks.
The other aspect of your images is that the water level appears to be well down. Probably seasonal but the defined edge might indicate the the level is much higher for the majority of the year.
If this is the pond that you were considering putting an island in, there might be times when the island is linked to the bank due to its mass replacing part of the water volume as seen in your images.
If it were mine, I'd introduce a little light, too, but leave the Alder on the edge (if I've ID'd that correctly). I might consider removing one of the big oak stems - say the one in the centre of 34 which appears to be on the north side. It will assist in reducing leaf loading and allow diffuse lighting.
It's difficult to offer advice in cases like this when we don't know the full picture. For example - are there any other ponds in the area? Is there a management plan in force for the wood? Is the ponds management affected by any statutory or non statutory land designation?
As it stands now, the pond will have place in the ecology of the wood, one that will have developed since the pond was created. Sometimes our vision of what we might like to see is totally at odds with what will happen naturally.
It is a difficult balancing act, please get back to us with your views. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
