| | | Re: Island depends what the ponds made out of?, current pond is concrete so the island was built up at the time of the rendering by the looks of it
Also what are you hoping uses the island?
a ideal size in mind?
I have seen floating islands put on reserves and used by a wide range of birds, once some cover has grown up on them
this gives some very simple methods The Pond Specialist - Alan Bridgewater, Gill Bridgewater - Google Books

| | | Re: Island If your pond is the woodland one I have seen in the "pond photo" thread, then tbh I would not bother trying to put in a floating island, it will serve no real purpose on a pond of that size and type. "Floating islands" are usually put in place as a refuge for ducks - a pond like yours will not be attractive to ducks as it is too small, lacking in vegetation and in a woodland.
Looking at you photos I would guess your pond is a shallow, semi-permenant pond. Due to the amount of leaf fall from the surrounding woodlands I doubt very much if you will ever get any significant growth of marginal vegetation as the leaf fall from the nearby trees will smother most things.
