I had 5 goldfish in my horses trough with the couple of bricks in the bottom for cover I went to clean the trough and there was no fish visible.
I nearly removed all the water before I saw them I thought they had been eaten but they lie low in the bottom when the water gets cooler they sit in the mud so I wouldn't be surprised if you see them again in the spring.
