pond worm behaviour

When I had a close look at my pond I observed a closely packed ball of pond worms in the shallows. Tadpoles were eating the worm ball, as were snails and flat worms. There were more pond worms deeper down in the pond, which the tadpoles seemed to leave alone.

Were the pond worms mating? or do they form a ball for protection like fish when a predator attacks? by the next day they had gone, eaten I assume.

They're tubifex worms in a ball like that.

Are so it looks like I have two different types of worms in the pond or did before the tubifex got eaten, not a very good way to try an survive.
