I seem to remember being told that these are eggs of something? Is that correct?

I'd say seaweed Nige. Bladderwrack - Fucus vesiculosus I think.

Not sure but you might be thinking of "mermaids purses" skate eggs. I think yours might be seaweed, kelp..
But I could be wrong it could be some other sea-creatures egg sack..  |

Bladderwrack, Nige, as Dave P says. There is a similar species, Twisted Wrack, this as its name suggests has twisted tips. The bladders can vary in number according to the degree of exposure - fewer on exposed shores. |

They are classed as plants but I'm getting out of my comfort zone here.

Seaweeds are algae which these days are seperated from plants into a kingdom of their own. Most algae do contain chlorophyll and can process sunlight in the same way as true plants do.
