| | | Seal, porpoise or shark? Hi all,
Sorry this is horribly vague but last week whilst on holiday I walked on to quiet sandy beach in Caister (Norfolk) just after 8am and just as I walked in between the sand dunes I saw something in the sea. It was around 2 metres long and only about 2 metres away from the shore. Initially I thought it was a log floating in the water and just looked at it for a moment and it appeared to have a bit sticking up like a fin or flipper. I'm kicking myself for not taking a photo of it as I had my camera in my hand and it was there for about 15 seconds or so before disappearing under water. It was quite quiet and I thought I heard a snort like noise as it went down. It appeared very dark in colour but I was a fair bit away to get too much of a detailed look.
My thoughts are, based on the location, that it was a grey seal maybe or a common seal as I believe they live on a sandy bank not far from the shore. Anyone any good guesses or certainty as to what it would have likely been based on the behaviour/time of day/year/location etc? I realise the description is quite vague and the sea could harbour anything! |

| | | Re: Seal, porpoise or shark? Thanks aeshna5, I'm thinking more now like you say that it was a seal as I think they tend to just float near the waters surface like that don't they? |

| | | Re: Seal, porpoise or shark? Probably a seal with a flipper up - they do tend to make a 'houghing' almost coughing noise before they dive |
