| | | Hanging Pond Basket I'd had this wall hanging basket lying around all summer, and never got around to putting it up. Today some of the pond plants I'd ordered arrived, and I got the idea to put the reed mace in it: from what I understand from the planting instructions it doesn't like being too deeply submerged.
The shelf around the pond looked a bit deep- so I thought I'd improvise.
I made a few small holes in the coconut liner, and pushed some strands of the elodea crispa in so that they are completely underwater, while the rest is above. The water level is still a bit low, so when it gets higher I can move the stake that it's hooked on back a bit, so it's level with the top of the pond liner.
Any suggestions or comments? I've not come across any info on coconut liners being used like this, so I'll have to keep an eye on how it holds up.

| | | Re: Hanging Pond Basket Looks a good idea - which reedmace species is it? Either way, it should be happy in that position even if the water rises quite a bit. |

| | | Re: Hanging Pond Basket We can now call Typha species Bulrushes.
Although for very many years we have been told that Typha should be refered to as 'Reedmace', (the name 'Bulrush' having been reserved for Scirpus sp).
The powers that be have agreed that what we have always refered to as Bulrush, namely Typha species should now officially be called Bulrushes. Scirpus sp. become Club-rushes.
So we've been right all along!

| | | Re: Hanging Pond Basket Reedmace is a much nicer name though, very descriptive and easy to remember. I'm all in favour of using it as often as possible. Club-rush, on the other hand, is rather dull and meaningless (Scirpus spp. don't look like clubs, whereas Typha is very mace-like). |

| | | Re: Hanging Pond Basket It's Typha minime so hopefully won't outgrow the basket... I hung another one today with another bunch of the same in it.
I've always loved bulrushes, but I knew they'd be too big for this pond so I thought 'Mini-me' ones might do. |

| | | Re: Hanging Pond Basket You could probably get away with Typha angustifolia in a basket if you kept it trimmed back as required, especially planted in subsoil it won't grow all that fast. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
