| | | Sturgeon in British waters My angling mate tells me there are Sturgeon in British waters
I know our native one is all but extinct so is this a recovery or
an import?

| | | Re: Sturgeon in British waters Our native is Acipenser sturio, which is apparently the only species to be found in European waters. The one that was caught in the Bristol channel in 2004 was Acipenser oxyrinchus, which is found in North America and the Gulf of Mexico. It is said to have made a journey of some 5000 km from its native waters. |

| | | Re: Sturgeon in British waters I belive that a number of sturgeon species have been stocked into angling lakes.I think the main species involved are Siberian Sturgeon and Sterlets, although I did read in one of the fishkeeping magazines that some shady angling waters have been buying Sturgeon from the pet centres and letting them out. |

| | | Re: Sturgeon in British waters I expect a few "pet" sturgeon get released into lakes and rivers once they've outgrown their homes.
One of my local garden centres stocks sturgeon (possibly sterlets) intended for garden ponds. The largest they have is about 3 feet long. Impressive beasts at that size let alone any bigger. |

| | | Re: Sturgeon in British waters There are several sturgeon farms in French rivers on the Atlantic coast. I am not sure but think they stock a Black Sea variety. No doubt there have been, and will be, escapees around and it is possible we will get them in UK rivers.
I also read a similar farm was planned for the UK but cannot remember where.

| | | Re: Sturgeon in British waters A few waters up and down the UK have been stocked with Sturgeon much in the same way Wels Catfish and Grass Carp have been |

| | | Re: Sturgeon in British waters There is a complex of small fishing lakes in Somerset that have Sturgeon in them and are caught by rod and line on a regular basis.

| | | Re: Sturgeon in British waters They enter British waters naturally. The biggest ever rod-caught fish in Britain was a sturgeon, on the river Towy/Tywi in 1933. It weighed in at 388 lbs. This site is quite interesting and should answer some questions: Sturgeon Acipenser sturio Page 2
I believe that the fish used to stock lakes for angling and such are 'sterlet' (Acipenser ruthenus), a different kettle of etc, etc altogether. Sterlet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |
