| | | Water Beatle for ID, please Saw this chap on my walk this afternoon, to start with I thought he was in trouble in the water, but he had plenty of opportunity to get out and didn't, he was quite large as well, and seemed very at home in the water, if someone could ID him for me I'd be very grateful
Thank you,
Christine.

Thank you,
Christine. | Its definately one of the Dyticus sp. It is most likely Dyticus marginalis, the great diving beetle. I could be also be 2 other species of Dyticus but these are both scarce. |

| | | Re: Water Beatle for ID, please We have 6 species of Dytiscus in the UK, 4 of which have a yellow band at the back of the thorax. In al probability this is D.marginalis, but a definate ID needs a look at the underside of the beetle to check the hind coxae. |

The only way I'd manage to get a pic of him upside down is if he started to do the backstroke the sides of the pond were quite steep and knowing me I'd end up head first next to him

They just come up for a quick lungful of air (except when they take to the wing). Pretty versatile minibeasts.
Great joy to spot one and even better to grab a shot - You did alright mate
