| | | Small freshwater fish ID This was taken today and I apologise for poor quatity. It was taken in a small pool close to Hetton Burn. I reckon about 10/12 cms and had bright orange/red underside. Can any one assist in ID and suggest if its presence indicates reasonable water quality. Thanks. |

The male of this species builds nest the encourages female to lay eggs in it whilst he fertilises the eggs and brings up the young.
they are not especially choosy about water quality but they are brilliant to keep in an aquarium to watch the breeding process. On second thoughts I would not recommend this for inexperienced aquarists.

Dave | How come? They are hardy adaptable little fish and are pretty easy to keep. As a kid I kept a single male in my back garden in a wee basin and fed it on earwigs. I think I had it almost a year before I set it free. |
