| | | Re: Pond Debris That`s a good idea. I am always reluctant to clean my pond out as I know that I chuck things out that I would prefer to keep if I could see them.

I based my ID on illustrations in "Insects of Britain and Western Europe" by Michael Chinery and actually compared Sympeca fusca on p27 with Pyrrhosoma nymphula on p25 - I think everyone can see how I came to my conclusion. However, I have now Google'd comparitive photographs and stand corrected.
I must ask the Mods to correct my WAB library pics to avoid misinforming readers. << How do I do that please? The Report button is "only" for spam and offensive posts etc.
Next time I will only use that book as a first step for ID! Thank You btw.

| | | Re: Pond Debris A lot of illustrations/photos of Pyrrhosoma nymphula are of males, which don't have so much black on the abdomen compared to the females (like yours). The only similar one is the Small Red, which is rare and occurs on bogs/heaths, so pretty much any red damselfly is going to be the Large Red (which is very common, and emerges early in the year). I haven't seen Sympecma fusca, but apparently it is much less brightly coloured, as well as being more a south European species. |

I'm thinking there could be a few more. |

| | | Re: Pond Debris Had the last one emerge yesterday morning, so I've now transferred all the contents of the red plastic container into a glass fish tank. There's still a lot of small things in there which I'll be able to observe through the glass.
The last few Damsels are still emerging from the pond, at a very slow rate now.
It's been a Bumper year, lost count though. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
