| | | What's this common newt up to? YouTube - Common newt and pond skater
At first I thought the newt was trying to eat the pond skater, but the longer I watched, the more it looked as if the newt was just playing. All it does is nudge the pond skater repeatedly, like those dophins playing football with jellyfish. Is this common behaviour? If I'd stayed to watch longer, would the newt have eaten the skater? |

| | | Re: What's this common newt up to? Well I notice the water boatman has a leg off so perhaps the newt ate it and is continuing to harrass the animal in the hope of getting another leg?!

| | | Re: What's this common newt up to? Water Boatmen can deliver a painful jab with the rostrum, so maybe the Newt is just being cautious, and looking for the optimal position to grab its prey.

Seems that your newt was so intent on lunch that it didn't mind your presence. Mine are much more shy and stay hidden during most of the day so far.

| | | Re: What's this common newt up to? Its a Waterboatman and it wants the other leg! I don't think the Newt is doing the nudging, it is the boatman trying to get away.

| | | Re: What's this common newt up to? So the boatman was doomed?
The newts in our pond are fairly bold. I don't know if it's because we spend a lot of time outsode so they just get used to us. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
