They have evolved a rather excellent way of catching their prey. The 'fang' at the front is actually its antennae that have evolved into this claw like arm which it uses to grab it prey. But evn more clever is the shiny slver oragn behind the head. There is another towards the rear of the body too and these work like submarine ballast tanks so the larva can float up or down towards a water flea/ Daphnia without giving away its presence by wriggling its body and is so able to sneak up (or down) on its prey. Evolution comes up with some brilliant outcomes |

I would rather watch this sort of stuff than go for miles to see a half dead bird that has been blown off course any day.

I like to know some good facts about an organism rather than just
its name  interesting stuff and good picture

Funny you should say that, as the is a good chance slaty backed gull that has masses of twitchers wizzing to Essex was less than a mile away when this was taken! |
