Goldfish Fry

Hi my name is dale messer and want to start breeding goldfish this year. I currently have about about 35 mature goldfish and i know they can breed because i discovered 46 babys last summer which i still have today. I would think that i could have had about 500 fish but i guess that the adults ate most of the eggs.

Anyway, i was woundering if someone could tell me when i could expect to see the fish breed in 2007 as i am not sure when to have my equipment set up by.

Not sure what you mean when you mention your 'equipment being set up'. I am assuming that you mean spawning equipment etc and that you have your goldfish in an outdoor pond. This being the case, my experience is that bringing fish into spawning is all about a combination of factors. These include, water temperature (68 degrees plus: helps sometimes to have suitable shallow areas) high oxygen contant, excellent water and fish condition. You have already achieved some very good results; it is often difficult to overwinter fry through their first winter outdoors. Good luck!

And I would guess that all the factors I mentioned above occur naturally in your pond Nightshade. Goldfish will only spawn in ideal water conditions; it is not a survival strategy for them. Also, the water chemistry is a vital element of egg and fry viability. It is not a question of test tubes and litmus paper but it is about maintaining a healthy environment under artificial conditions.
