| | | Alternatives to planting baskets Has anyone tried planting socks or planting bags which are alternatives to planting baskets?
As my shelves are not very wide in my new pond I thought they would be a good alternative but not sure and would welcome some feedback from anyone who has used them. Sometimes things can sound good in theory but are different in practice!

| | | Re: Alternatives to planting baskets I gave up using plastic baskets because after a while they break and the strips often fouled my dipping net. My preferred containers now are hessian sacks such as those used for sand bags. I add a small amount of clay impregnated with pebbles and then top up to the required depth using aquatic soil. Be prepared to cut the sack to get the required surface dimensions before inserting your plants. Tie in the loose ends using heavy duty garden string, then place in a washing up bowl until all the growing medium settles and you are sure that it will not float. Place on the ledge or allow to sink depending on the plants requirements. |

| | | Re: Alternatives to planting baskets Briliant idea! I don't like baskets as you have to keep re potting & you do a lot of damage to get them out of the pot. I like my plants to root free but the trouble is you can't keep the soil around the roots. I will give it a go this year as I am thinking some may not have survived the harsh cold spell.

T2 | I hasten to add that I've never actually tried, or heard of anyone trying, this technique. It was straight off the top of my head (I'd just got back from a "job" at a bank )
If anybody does try it, I'd be interested in the results.
