| | | Advice needed Morning Guys,
Could anyone please help me, I am currently doing my part of a group assignment giving to me and my class mates on a countryside management and conservation course. My part is about creating a pond in one of the corners of a field used for growing crops. The problem is I am not really sure what would be suitable to grow in a pond like this and just wondered if anyone could help me, advice would be very much appreciated.
I would also appreciate any information about the pond depths, shapes etc…
Many thanks

| | | Re: Advice needed Your pond should be a shallow depression with large shallow margins and a deeper central area to about 1 meter. You need to provide a 5+ buffer strip to protect it from agro-chemicals.
Good plants are -
ragged robin
soft rush
meadowsweet
marsh cinquefoil
yellow flag iris
water plantain
water forget-me-not
mares-tail
greater spearwort
arrowhead
amphibious bisort
water crowfoot
spiked water milfoil
common water starwort
white water starwort
white waterlily
water soldier
willow moss
curled pondweed
common hornwort
frogbit
fennel-like pondweed
duckweed
water mint
brooklime
purple loosestrife
marsh marigold
cuckoo flower
water cress
Try and locate the pond in a sunny area which gets plenty of light (warmth), also if you can try and connect it to a hedgerow, ditch etc. |

| | | Re: Advice needed do you know the crop species being grown and any treatments it is likely to get over the growing year, some will affect growth rates of other non-target plants for instance, or if a feed is used could lead eutrophication

To tom00_uk,
I don’t have the information to hand but will try and look it up.
Many thanks once again,
Robert
P.s. I'm thinking that I will line the pond with a type of clay my teacher told me about in class but for the life of me cant remember what he called it, does anyone know what it's called?

Some good advice here, not sure what level your course is (guessing ND) but never the less I would suggest you have a look in your college library there will be books that covers Countryside Management. The book that I would recommend is The Pond Book by The Ponds Conservation Trust, it has all the information that you need.
Probably too late for your assignment.
