| | | Barnacle ID Can anyone help me identify this stalked barnacle? I found it attached to the inside of an old plastic tub on the Isle of Mull, during the summer.
It appears to be some kind of Goose Barnacle (order Pedunculata) but beyond that I'm stumped. |

The colouring is closer than other stalked barnacle species.... not sure though, I can't say I've had much experience with stalked barnacles where i live. |

I've come to the conclusion that it's the 'spinose variety' of Lepas pectinata ....after much searching I managed to find a book on Barnacles (published in 1907!) on Open Library, which had excellent illustrations.
This would make sense, as it is apparently the smallest of the goose barnacles - the specimen I found was only 1.5cm in length. |

| | | Re: Barnacle ID Hello Theresa.
Very interesting barnacle there. After posting it on the Glaucus British Marine Life group, David Fenwick says its probably the spinose variety of Lepas pectinata.
If you compare the photo with the illustration here, it looks like a good shout.
The full details of Lepas pectinata are here... Macrobenthos of the North Sea - Crustacea > Species: Lepas pectinata
