worms in pond weed

While clearing out the blanket weed from my pond today I dragged out some quite large clumps of the stuff that were filled with thin dark red worms, similar to tubifix worms, very thin and about 2 cms long. The matted clumps of the weed seemed like nests containing these creatures. I left great piles of the weed and worms on the side of the pond for the robins to enjoy. Does anyone know what they were?

Can you get a photo? Are you sure they wernt tubifex? Possibly Chironomid midge larvae if not. Some species can be very red and look similar.

Will try to get a photo when the weather is a little brighter and I can scoop some more of the weed out.

Thats why I joined this site ,as I too ,am keen to learn, even though I've been observing wildlife all my life I still know very little!
