Palmate/Smoothe Newts

Hmmm. This newt I've got has disappeared for weeks at a time before and then resurfaced a few millimetres longer. We've taken a pic of it sitting contentedly on the pondweed before and will post a video on my blog showing this. The picture on my blog's recent, taken only a couple of weeks ago and the newt's still very much got its gills which is why I'm not so worried. I agree, if the gills have gone I'll definitely have to think of a private bowl for it

Hi,

I've uploaded a new video and picture of the newt My Fish Drinks Posh Water. It's definitely maturing and now much more used to our presence, posing for photos and staring back at us! Its legs are much stronger now with the swimming it's been doing.

Dogghound, Kayleigh, would either of you be able to tell me whether it's a smooth or palmate newt? I'm looking at ways of providing some surface on top of the water in the bowl the newt can sit on.

PS. Am I right in saying it's pretty rare for someone to have a newt raised in captivity? The fish and newt are all getting along, for now ...
