| | | Can you get two spined sticklebacks? Decided to catch & identify the squiddlers who live in my wildlife pond (didn't introduce them). Was going to photograph one & put it on here for id but when I caught one I thought " oh it's a stickleback" but I could only count two spines. Looked up on the web but could only find info & images of three spined. Are my guys deformed, or is this a perfectly normal variation, or can I not count ?
The water was a bit green & as I only have a mobile phone decided the pic wouldn't be worth taking through the jar. Then I thought I could wet a piece of thick kitchenroll & lay it out but when I looked into its little eyes, couldn't bring myself to do it, so I let it go .
I could give it another go if people really need it tho'.
Any suggestions?

Any suggestions? | it's three spined and ten spined I think. Only two species. The three spined males have the red throats. You think you've got one with two? It probably got broken off in a fight. |

| | | Re: Is this a Stickleback? Hmmm... decided maybe it might not be a stickle back then as all of them have two spines. Please see photo, sorry about the quality, but it's the best out of a bad bunch

| | | Re: Can you get two spined sticklebacks? Hi Cowgirl,
These are Three-spined Sticklebacks. There are two conspicuous spines, but the there is also a third, much smaller spine in front of the dorsal fin. They're great little fish, always a lot of fun to watch!
