Gulls feeding young on white mass

I said crumpled cardboard, it actually looked more like it was pleated. I don't think it was a sea fan, I've found that we only have two species in the UK and it didn't look like either of those. The youngsters have been flying for over a week now and spend a lot of time on the roof where the adults will be feeding them out of sight, so I doubt if I will see any more of those organisms. I'm still feeding them, of course, and they often come down to the balcony for a meal.
