| | | Freshwater crab (from Greece) More WAG than WAB, as this freshwater crab was found in Greece. Is it Potamon fluviatile?
Thanks in advance for any info.

| | | Re: Freshwater crab (from Greece) Many thanks. The only f/water crab I had heard of was the Chinese mitten crab, so I was a bit puzzled by this one. I googled freshwater crabs and Potamon fluviatile looked the closest, except that a lot of pictures showed the crab looking ‘boxier’ than my leggy specimen and I wondered if was one of the other species.
Incidently, it was in a pool under one of the Greek Islands’ few waterfalls, at Lefkas. It was catching insects that fell on the water and devouring them with relish.
Best wishes

| | | Re: Freshwater crab (from Greece) Your link informs of four Potamon spp. The distribution map has them pretty well geographically seperated so you might get a clue from that.
P.fluviatile looks promising having just found where Lefkas is situated. |

| | | Re: Freshwater crab (from Greece) Hi Woodman,
Yes, looks like it. This is the real buzz of natural history – you start with ‘what’s that?’ and before you know it, you’ve learnt that there are four species of freshwater crab in Greece and that one dominates the west.
Best wishes
