Am I wanting too much from my cascades?

I have an unfiltered wildlife/informal pond, to which last year I added a nice series of cascades + mini stream to provide more oxygen etc, which has worked wonders. The only trouble is I hate looking at it when the whole thing is carpeted with slimy thread algae. So far I have taken to scraping it off the natural stone slabs and rocks with an old plastic card, which is very tedious. I realise that even doing this I'm losing some stream organisms, but I do feel it needs some management. Should I be thinking about a filter? Does anyone have any good advice? Or am I just expecting too much?

You could possibly try and add some barley straw at the top off the cascade. You might be able to conceal it and it would probably keep the algae at bay. Just an Idea

Could be too many nutrients in pond.Remove organic material like sticks and leaves.Add more plants.Filtration may be needed.So you may have to upgrade pump with a filter.Also circulation improvement helps.
