| | | Breeding Goldfish Hi, My name is dale and i hope in the spring of 2007 to start breeding my goldfish. I originally started with ten goldfish which i purchased at my local garden centre. Then in june 2006 i discovered that there were baby creatures swimming in my pond. At first i wasn't sure what they were, but as time went on it became clearer that they were baby goldfish (fry). On a sunny day about a week after my discovery i counted about 16 feeding on the algae in my pond. I later discovered that i had 46 fry when i cleaned the pond out for the first time. A few weeks later i noticed something floating on the surface of the water. It was the head end of a baby fry which i think must have been eaten by one of ten adult goldfish.
I then decided to build another pond next to the other one. Once i had finished the pond in august i moved the ten adult goldfish to it so the fry which i kept in my other pond would be ok. A few weeks after transferring the fish my uncle said that i could have his goldfish because he was going to fill his pond in. So i went to his house and caught all the fish that he had. There were 19 adults and about 21 baby goldfish which i put into my second pond. I put the fry in the second pond because they were quite big and wouldn't be eaten my the others.
I am now currently waiting for spring to properly start breeding the fish. I hope to get a minimum of about 4000 eggs as i have four big females which i know are capiable of breeding with the males.
Please take a moment to answer my poll. |

| | | Re: Breeding Goldfish I did in my pond when I was a teenager. I haven't had a pond since then. It's great when they do breed. I have a friend who had a large pond and she had koi that bred in there but someone came in the night and stunned and pinched the lot

| | | Re: Breeding Goldfish We've had both goldfish and golden orfe breeding in our pond, but most of the fry do get eaten either by the fish or the assorted wildlife in the pond. I tend to just let nature take its course, and we've had a few survivals. The newts also breed and, judging by the rise in numbers over the last few years, a reasonable number of them are surviving too. |

| | | Re: Breeding Goldfish The goldfish in our pond breed 3 or 4 times throughout the summer, it's a real pain actually and we've now taken to not feeding the bigguns after they've spawned for a couple of day,so that they eat the eggs and we then don't have to relocate the babies.
A pic from early spring |

| | | Re: Breeding Goldfish yeah mine breed, as do the rudd and carp iv got a large pond, its very natural, and the best way for fry to survive is to have lots of vegetation for them to hide in, its great when they do, greater when they reach adult size, but also good for the whole ecosystem they provide food for insect larvae etc | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
