| | | Three small watery things for ID if poss I hope somebody might be kind and able to give me a name for these - I love to label things if I can...
first these small, almost 2D snails that move around under water and when they're 'swimming'/ unattached to anything seem to be able to change direction with their antennae as rudders
then these midgeish flies clinging to things - which I've never sure if they're drowning or just emerging or what
and then these larvae - which are a bit more substantial than others, but not massively..
Any help much appreciated! Dill |

| | | Re: Three small watery things for ID if poss The 3rd one is a Damselfly larva, it's a bit tricky to ID to species level from photos, as most people naturally focus in on the head end. However, the 3 lamellae at the back are probably more useful in IDing. Nice shots though. |

| | | Re: Three small watery things for ID if poss The snail looks like its Bathyomphalus contortus, it seems to have the half moon shaped whorls. Can you get any more on these snail...size, width and shot of its aperture would help to be positive with id. |

| | | Re: Three small watery things for ID if poss Many thanks indeed to you Earthdragon64 and Fauna. It's so great and so helpful when those-who-know give a steer! I googled lamellae and that led onto looking at a whole lot of great damselfly larvae shots - totally fascinating! And after that I googled Bathyomphalus contortus - which led into a page of images about the Family Planorbidae (there's a whole other world out there, isn't there!), and I see now why taking a picture of the aperture matters! I'll include two more shots here, in case they're conclusive when you know what counts, but am afraid I haven't got the right angle. (I'll know for next time!) From memory I'd say perhaps 10mm across and 2mm wide. ATB, Dill |

| | | Re: Three small watery things for ID if poss Yes...with snails it is best to get a number of different veiws. Aperture, umbilicus, size and width to help with many ids. Anisus vortex could also be another possible, they reach 10mm. Bathyomphalus contortus is only about 6mm. |

| | | Re: Three small watery things for ID if poss Many thanks Mark re number two. And thanks again Chris. I hadn't realised what a difference a few mm make with snails so will take proper note next time, and cover all the angles too if I can time!
