| | | Three shells from Hazelbank All of these pics were taken in March 2010 at Hazelbank on the shore of Belfast Lough.
The shells in the first pic were very small (about 1cm in length) and I only spotted them by accident in the sand at low tide when I went to pick up another small shell..
The second pic looked like a periwinkle but this one had bands of colour.
The third pic was once again very small (less than 10 mm).
Help with IDs would be great.
Thanks, John |

| | | Re: Three shells from Hazelbank I'm not sure but going by my ''Phillip's Guide to seashores and shallow seas of Britain and Northern Europe'' ....
the first one looks like common wentletrap (Epitomium clathrus) or maybe a needle shell (Bittium reticulatum) - I think it's the latter one?
second could be a banded chink shell (Lacuna vincta)
don't know about the third one..
hope that will give you some things to google at least |

| | | Re: Three shells from Hazelbank It has been suggested that the third image is a whirlpool rams horn snail but are they found in the sea?

| | | Re: Three shells from Hazelbank The third pic is of Bathyomphalus contortus, the Twisted Ram's-horn. They are a freshwater species, how it got to where it is??
Just had a quick look (i've never done coastal species) and the first does look to be Bittium reticulatum, the other look alikes i'm not sure on...i seem to be finding B.lacteum (not sure where found) and B.simplex(channel islands only). Cerithiopsissp also looks similar.

| | | Re: Three shells from Hazelbank Isn't Belfast lough a tidal lagoon rather like the Montrose basin? you'll get enough freshwater to support 'frewhwater species' with a high tollerance to salt, those little rams horns pop up in the nastiest places, they'd probably survive in soup! |
