She Turned me into a Newt!....

Not quite true, but pops into my head everytime I hear 'Newt'

Would these be smooth newts?


Do newts change colour through the year? these are certainly more orangey than I remember last year.

Palmate newts, the central photo shows a dark newt on the right but I carnt make out which it is. Newts vary in colour between individuals and at different times of year.

I agree palmate. The first one is a nice plump (pregnant) female, in the second photo the male is on the left, and the 3rd photo is a male.
If you have a small clear tank (a lid of a scalextric car is ideal if you happen to have one), fill with pond water and gently put the newt in. You will be able to see the male's crest better, and can lift up the tank to see the underside.

Thank you There are some darker newts with light bellies in the murky green pond too, but they weren't up for having their pictures taken lol

I guessed the larger ones would be females, but wasn't sure.

The middle picture has a ramshorn snail on the right

Thank you for the tip on seeing the crests and undersides, shall have to try that.
