| | | Fish ID please Hi All
I went for a walk along the shore today and I was looking under rocks etc when I came across this fish. I haven't the foggiest what it is. The only thing I can think of is an eel, just going off the shape of it's head. I would appreciate it if you could identify it for me.
Cheers

| | | Re: Fish ID please It is certainly one of the Blenny family but I'm not sure which. I think the true 'Butterfish' should have black spots along the back and a more upward pointing mouth.
In some ways, this one resembles the Viviparous Blenny but there are several similar species and it really requires an expert in this field to separate them. |

| | | Re: Fish ID please The butterfish or gunnel as it is sometimes known,is very similar to the eelpout (viviperous blenny). From what i can see the markings do look like dark spots of the butterfish (gunnel),the eelpout has more blotchy markings. This is Just my opinion and by no means certain . |

| | | Re: Fish ID please This is definately a Gunnel (Butterfish) Pholis gunnellus . You can see the dark square patches bordered in a more pale yellow/brown. This feature is not seen in any other similar British fish. |
