| | | Re: ponds Had a sift through the sludge in the bottom and it's totally packed with inverts due to the lack of fish . Didnt want to cause disturbance deeper incase of frogs. Although I found a southern hawker nymph which I will be looking forward to catching up with as an adult. |

However, i do know that some do... | Sorry Dan, but I have fish in my pond. Lost 2 this year. This has never happened before and I have had the pond for about 8 years.
I have been thinking about getting rid of the fish and making a more wildlife friendly pond and this has made my mind up for me. A friend has offered to rehome my fish in her pond so this is one task I have set myself for this year, |

| | | Re: ponds I have three ponds one for the Koi and Sturgeon which didn't freeze over completely during the past few weeks and two others specifically designed for wildlife. I also made an hybernacula at the side of one of the wildlife ponds, filled it with rubble, logs etc, before covering it with a mound of soil, dug from the hole filled with rubble. The mound has been planted up with meadow grasses and wild flowers. Hopefully the newts and toads will be ok during the winter in the safety of the hybernacula.
The Koi pond is raised so hopefully amphibians can't get access. The pond was visited by a Heron last week, thankfully the pond is covered with netting, but I didn't half feel sorry for it, hopefully its survived through the worst of the winter freeze so far.
One wildlife pond has thawed out nicely so hopefully the occupants will be OK the other is in a shaded area and is still solid with ice. |

| | | Re: ponds Ah, yes you are quite correct.
But it is the general view that if you want a 'pond for wildlife' it should at best be fish free....they tend to eat a lot of things you would normally find in a fish free pond. BUT, some people swear exception to the rule...
But on basic terms you can have an ornamental/goldfish pond....or a wildlife friendly fish free pond with shallow areas and lightly sloping sides...and as natural as possible.
