ID: weird looking creatures in bucket of water: please

My mam bought a bag of peat/compost about 6 months ago. She dumped it as is, into this large flexible bucket, which over time filled up with the excessive rain that some parts of the UK has been having.

I noticed these strange looking creatures swimming about in the bucket. They sort of swim really fast, like they are spinning there bodies around and around, when they see you approach the surface.

They also stick there there back ends up to the surface of the water probably to take in air.

I have taken some photos, can you ID them? Thanks for looking

They look like mosquito larvae to me.

I would agree usually in my bucket and the water is stagnant

Many thanks for the help. I will tell me mother to pour a gallon of fuel in there and chuck a lit match on it :lol

umm fuel and fertilizer.....better not eh!

possibly not a good idea. Chances are they won't ever bother you and will provide food for local wildlife (birds etc..)
