| | | Re: Are these fish roach? i would go for rudd, roach have a red iris, rudd have yellow, orange iris.purely because the iris doesnt look red,ill plump for rudd.the lower lip protrudes on a rudd, opposite to roach but hard to see and use as id in this pic. |

Adam | I would of said thats the otherway round (only really in older fish) young roach and rudd are similar in bodyshape. Ive always found rudd to be deeper rounder fish.
The fish in the photo is a rudd. The easy way to ID them from the top like this is the dorsal fin position its further back in a rudd just after the hump of the back (easy when you compare it with the ventral fins directly below, inline on roach, dorsal behind in rudd). In a roach its more on the hump. Naturenutz points out the other main differences. |

| | | Re: Are these fish roach? there either roach or rudd but from the pic quality its too hard to tell i would say roach as rudd are more golden in colour |

In roach this would be equal (inline). Rudd can be quite silvery but not usually the blue/white silver of a roach. You can see the bronze across this fishes back.
Welcome to WAB by the way |

| | | Re: Are these fish roach? The first is hard to say and could be Roach, and they do occur in mixed shoals with Rudd.
Dogghound's reasoning is correct for the second pic, which is clearer - it is a Rudd.
Cheers
Ken
