| | | Newts and fish arrive in my pond Since I built and planted my pond I have watched the plants thrive and flower (in some cases) but have been puzzled by the lack of spawn in its first year of maturity.
I have also been pondering (?) about introducing fish but because of the size of the largest of the two ponds (1m wide x 2m long x 0.75 m deep) I decided that it was too small (according to advisors here and there on the net).
In the last week I have been taken by surprise. I sometimes sit by the pond after dark, armed with a torch so that I can see the night-shift on duty. Recently I have seen juvenile newts (so believed because they had legs) and was pleased about that. Later I saw something of similar size but without legs and they were swimming with a fish-like action. Am I right in thinking that these are juvenile fish? And if so how did they get there? (So far, there have been no day-time birds to the pond and its construction would not offer opportunity to herons (which in any case have much better facilities for fishing elsewhere and not too far away. I have never seen a heron over my garden in nearly four years of being here).
I will try and post a picture of the two adjacent ponds and if I manage it thet will be in a Gallery named Bryngolleni. |
