| | | Re: brown trout garden pond Brown trout will pretty much clean out your pond for you, they will eat everything in it if it will fit in their mouths.
Not a good idea unless you want to fish for them
If that is the case buy some rainbows and feed them pellets. Then you can use a pellet fly or lure to catch them. Yawn

| | | Re: brown trout garden pond I wouldnt but brownies in a pond, they need high oxygen levels. Why not try netting some of the fry, rearing them in a tank or vat and then selling them on? |

| | | Re: brown trout garden pond Koi keepers often keep sturgeon or sterlets, there are many sub species. But 4ft is a good size in any koi pond. They need plenty of oxygen and do best in cold water, they wont be liking warm pond water with the temps weve had lately. Many koi ponds are built with no ledges etc just deep fibreglassed vertical walls, built to suit koi only ,oh and maybe a sturgeon ,this way the water is kept crystal clear with no vegetation ,infact the only thing in the pond is fish with a bottom drain leading to an external filter is the modern set up although there are many different set ups. |

| | | Re: brown trout garden pond A friend, Pizza Hubert once had a sterlet, his pride and joy, a truly wonderful creature, he had it about three years, he would spend hours trying to find it amongst the murk of the pool, one year the snows fell, the snows melted, then the lake Hubert lived by flooded and there was no more sterlet.

| | | Re: brown trout garden pond Again try to ensure whatever 'frycleaner' you introduce is only of one gender. You don't want MORE fry.

| | | Re: brown trout garden pond thanks for all your info, probably leave the brownies dont really want to risk upsetting the other fish.Although having 2 pumps flowing,6ft deep with weed and ledges lost both sturgeon in the last couple of days,as'naturenutz' says they dont like the warm water or weather.i will net up the fry and find a home for them. |
