| | | Very small Garden Pond - Advice needed by newbie I'm hoping to have a small wildlife pond in my tiny urban garden. Only space I have available for the pond is 3ft by 4 ft. Is this too small? What sort of pondlife can I hope to get with such a small pond? |

I think the best depth you'll need will be 2 to 2.5 ft and then the size of the pond is up to you ,if you only have 3-4ft then lots of others on here have managed to make lovely ponds around that size.Use the search function, top right corner and you should find loads of great photos and info.
I,m sure if you go ahead you'll be amazed how quickly different things will move in.
This is my little effort,it's about 6x6ft ,was put in around April and I have already got 1newt 1frog ,pondskaters, watersnails, water beetles and loads of larvae.
You can make it to please yourself really, but it's important that one area at least is shallow enough to let small animals scramble out.
Go on ,do it,you'll enjoy it. |

| | | Re: Very small Garden Pond - Advice needed by newbie You will be able to make a lovely little pond even in that area.
Try to have one sloping beach area for easy access in and out, shelves for marginals and part as deep as you can make it. This is so that it is less likely to freeze right to the bottom in a bad winter.
Have one section of shore where you can stand or kneel to peer into the depths, with a paving slab if you wish. Try not to ppave all around it because this makes it difficult for amphibians to get in and out, and they risk dessicating.
Most of all, enjoy it! |

I have a small barrel pond as well as a larger pond, I get lots of insects damselflies and frog spawn in mine so go a head.
A 2ft depth will be OK put in lots of oxygenating plants to keep the water fresh don't forget to show it off when its finished.
