| | | Scorpion Beetle Hi... Just wanted to know if anyone has come across a ' scorpion beetle ' We have a new wildlife pond and took a couple of buckets of pond water from Keighley Tarn ( along with the scorpion beetle) Looked it up on the net and pretty sure it is a scorp.... will it eat tadpoles, we think maybe it will. We have been offered some tadpoles & plants - should be get rid of the scorp before we add this new pondlife?? |

They will take tadpoles but I am very jealous as I would love to have them in my pond I would leave it in there, it's going to be part of the natural balance of the pond, you need the predators as well as the prey species.
The current advice is not to transfer tadpoles as they may pass on disease, it's much better to just let the wildlife find its way into your pond naturally. My pond has only been in for just over a year and we had our first frog visit recently. |

| | | Re: Scorpion Beetle They can eat tadpoles but as I understand it, Water Scorpions seldom persue their prey but wait for it to pass. Therefore, I think it's more likely that they may pick off sickly ones that wouldn't make it in any case. You would be lucky to get more than half a dozen adult frogs from spawn. But those frogs will be hardiest with the best genes.
Good luck with your pond, water scorpions are classy bugs to have but will need others to multiply (obviously). They don't fly very well, so dispersal is usually by walking to new ponds.
