You have to consider this is a home made affair and i suspect he didnt have any 'turf' to hand or had the budget to buy any?...I suspect by now this year the 'mud' has been colonised by weed/wildflower species and grasses which should help hold it together?

To be honest a 'true' wildlife pond should have a complete covering of subsoil over the entire area/liner before filling with water....obviously as nutrient poor as possible...

I used sand in mine instead of subsoil as i didnt have any available and i am getting amazing results.
