| | | From a Hole in the Ground Hi all thought this might be of interest and any comments on future plans are very gratefully received.
About two years ago I though of digging a LARGE pond/lake in my field at the back of the house, I got a digger and dug about 4 foot by 6 foot and about 5/6 foot deep, this was the test dig to see what the soil was like and to see if it held water, I am not a fan of liners in lakes, and I cant afford it. Any way I left the hole and other things like making a living got in the way. However I am back on track again and having looked at Hole on a regular basis to see if it held water I am happy it does, BUT Three days ago I wandered down to have a look and something shot across my vision, so I laid down and looked for a while, Five Frogs sitting taking in the Sun, must have been tens and tens of Pond skaters, beetles including a Massive Thumb sized one, loads of different things going on, I was about to go when I saw....A fish, I couldnt beleive it, so I sat for longer, I saw six different, and yes they were different fish in the hole in the ground, I was amazed, still am. The hole is in the middle of a field how they got there is beyond me.
So I am goi8ng ahead in the next few weeks digging, but I intend to leave the hole and dam it, when the Lake is more established I will breach the dam and allow the first hole to join the lake, I feel really protective over the life that has graced my hole in the ground and do not want to hurt them at all, even though I am convinced one of the Fish is a Predator, a Perch to be presise, but he got there some how and as far as I mam concerned he stays, I call him Fred, ok I know!!.
Any way thought you all might like to know what is going on in the hole in the ground and any advice about the LARGE Pond/lake would be great. Cheers

| | | Re: From a Hole in the Ground Sounds great Chris. Any chance of a picture?
If you can estimate the age of the fish, it might help to work out how they got there. If they were not eggs when they were introduced (they were not carried unknowingly from another site) then I would suggest human intervention. Are there six different kinds of fish?
Intriguing.
Anyway, sounds like the wildlife are finding your pond to their liking. Can you dig two instead? Not sure if the current pond life would appreciate living there while you extend their pond You could join the two later in the year when the pond is quieter.
EDIT - Sorry, I think that's what you are saying, isn't it.

| | | Re: From a Hole in the Ground HI thanks for the reply, Definatley NOT human intervention that I am 100% suyre of, no one can get near the Hole in the Ground as they have to go across my land past my house, and even stupid burglars dont drop fish off!, No these are small I would say about two maybe one is three inches long, I say six different as I saw six different fish, I think there are three different species, one looks very much like a Perch, one is silver two are like, and only like, the tetras you see in tanks and two are Black, I think, but cannot say for Def that I also saw a Newt, now I do have a front garden pond that last year had a minimum of 12 newts in it, not so many as yet this year but we have recently bought some ducks and they love the pond, but as yet I dont think they have found the hole in the ground, interestingly though a Moorhen did find the Garden pond, also a Guinea fowl came to visit one day, God knows where he came from, but back to the hole, I intend keeping it as is until the larger one is established, which looking at the recently dug pond wont be long. |

That sounds like a very interesting project, I'm deeply envious , I wish I had that much space to work with. I'd love to see some photos.

I also have some video footage of the fish but again how on earth to get them up on here is a question I need to look into. |
