| | Mysterious eggs Overnight these eggs have appeared on one of the above water rocks in our pond. I have to mention that our pond is purely asthetic, there is nothing wildlife about it, but we have pretty much perfect water and have found a newt in it, we only have a few lillies that haven't grown much yet and no water loving plants around the pond. It is a raised pond with sheer sides.
I have tried to identify these eggs on my own, however I aven;t had much luck.
The eggs are around 1-2 mil in diamiter and have a thin layer of mucus around them.
I would really like to identify these eggs so that we know what they are and the ways we can help them along and keep them safe from the large fish we have in the pond.
Here's a photo to help you |

| | | Re: Mysterious eggs Hi Kinli - what you have there are frog eggs, they are predated frogspawn. The frog would have bee killed by perhaps a hedgehog or otter and these are the remains of what would have been in the ovaries and oviducts.
I had lots of help finding out what they were when I found them - if you had asked me two weeks ago I couldn't have helped you!
Welcome to WAB by the way!

| | | Re: Mysterious eggs Goosey I'm sorry I don;t mean to contradict you, but we don;t have any frogs in our pond, my dad is rather obsessed with keeping them away. There haven't been any dead frogs in or around our pond and the closest thing to an otte or a hedgehog we have around our garden is our cats and they hate frogs.
Is there anything else they could possibly be? Like I said our pond isn;t a wildlife pond and if it is anything else we would like to be able to help them |

| | | Re: Mysterious eggs you cld well have the odd frog around but not have seen any, they are pretty much hidden in logs, grass, under rocks etc apart from when in pond for mating. If you have a cat maybe that's what ate the frog. By the way why wld you discourage frogs from the garden ? They are great for mollusc control

Please read this thread and make up your own mind about your eggs though, New year, same problem ID needed! - Wild About The World
but as Galanthus says you possibly have frogs that you are just unaware of. |

It's a built up pond with sheer walls, the frogs can jump in, but they cannot get out, there are no plants to attract other wildlife for them to eat and personally fishing out dead frogs is not a job I want to do |

| | | Re: Mysterious eggs You cant exactly stop wildlife getting into your pond but if you could put a planter close to the edge to allow easy access out if anything falls in, hedgehogs are notorious for falling into ponds and drowning.. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
