| | | Frog attached to Koi You may already be aware but I joined the forum to warn Koi keepers of hormonal frogs!
I removed a frog from the face of my Koi just the other day and put him in the field.
To my horror, the next day not only had the frog returned and re attached itself - it had wedged it's arms (up to the elbow) in my Koi's eye sockets!!
I had great trouble removing it. Thankfully, it doesn't seem to have done great damage to my fish, having said that it's early days yet.
Anyone else had this traumatic experience or can explain what the frog was up to??

I havent experienced this myself, even though I kept koi for some years, but I do know of it.
Your frog is simply desperate to mate - anything will do lol
They can damage the eyes of koi and they will sometims even latch on to the gills.
I wonder if you could put a very fine net tightly around your pond to try and prevent them getting in? Thats the only thing I can think of to try and avoid serious damage to your fish.

| | | Re: Frog attached to Koi Yes thank you Linda, I'll secure some netting for the mating period! Maybe there is an imbalance in female frogs in my area?
I'm squeamish at the best of times but felt so sorry for my fish I just lept into defense mode - not something I would wish on anybody to repeat so keeping in mind Linda's advice, watch frog behaviour at this time of year.
No more cute little frogs in my pond I'm afraid! |

Glad you found that useful
I dont believe its anything to do with an imbalance of females, its just something that frogs are known to do with fish unfortunately.
I stopped keeping koi 3 years ago - I had a dedicated koi pond of 3,000 galls, so it wasnt frog friendly at all - but the house we are in now has a small goldfish pond which I have kept running.
We do get frogs in our pond and we have 7 goldfish in there, but as yet, I havent seen them latch on to the fish in this pond, so fingers crossed they dont.
You might have to pin the mesh quite closely to the ground to prevent them getting under it, and you may even have to check your pond to make sure there isnt one already hiding in the pond before you pin it down.
Good luck!
