| | | Beachcombing ID Out on Formby Point this afternoon I found this thing on the beach, but I haven't a clue what it is. It's quite rubbery, tough and fleshy, 5cms long, shrivelled in on itself and it smells of the sea. I'm fairly certain it's organic, but I could be wrong  and it looks like it was originally connected to something else - at the bottom of the first pic. I don't think it's ambre gris...any ideas

| | | Re: Beachcombing ID Ambre gris or Grey amber is basically whale vomit. Bits of indigestible food irritate it's stomach and is brought up in a sort of waxy substance. It's then altered in some way in the sea(as far as I can remember) and can get washed up on shores. It is extremely valuable because the perfume industry use it as one of their ingredients. It cannot be made synthetically either.
