| | | Re: Beachcombing ID Just caught up with this thread!
This I reckon is one of our soft corals, Alcyonium digitatum. Commonly named Dead Man's Fingers. Out of water, a firm spongy texture, of various colours. But in water, in a "happy" state it has thousands of tiny polyps all over the surface of what is a colony of individuals.
A similar, but very different animals is the sea squirt. Easily identifyable as the sea squirt will live up to its name if given a gentle squeeze! |

| | | Re: Beachcombing ID I'd put my money on the sea squirt (ascidian or tunicate for the science-types) if it is indeed tough and rubbery. I think dead-man's fingers would be much softer and unlikely to show up during beachcombing as they are a sublittoral species and need to be underwater 24\7. As for being the inside of an urchin, it would have disintegrated into smelly, sticky goo- they don't look anything like this.
If it is a sea squirt (and you still have it) you'll be able to tell because you should be able to fill it with water and squeeze it like a water pistol (hence the name, as someone already mentioned!).
Hope this helps
