| | | Extreme Low Tide Next Feb Typically, a low tide of 1.2m can yield some good life here at Scarborough, and 1m is even better. We mark down days when the low tide is less than 1m as rockpooling days now. Recently we went to two nighttime low tides of 0.95 and found a huge variety of sealife.
Next February, around the 11th I think, there is a low tide of 0.41m, the lowest tide we've ever been to by miles.
My question is this, seen as most of the littoral area will become exposed (very unusual) what chances are there of sealife usually deeper water getting trapped in littoral pools? We have our fingers crossed that we will see some amazing stuff |

| | | Re: Extreme Low Tide Next Feb The best thing about any beachcombing or rockpooling is finding the unusual or the unexpected. You never know what you might find.
Some things in rockpools can be tempted out with bait of some sort. And even if the bait doesn't work you can always feed the anemones.
Keep an eye on the tide and the weather. Take a couple of plasters with you too - barnacles and rocks can do nasty things to cold fingers!
I hope the weather is good for you. I am looking forward to the first nasty storm of the winter for some good beachcombing on the south Devon coast.

| | | Re: Extreme Low Tide Next Feb It has been a different winter so far Marineboy.
Usually strong westerly and south-westerly winds would drive in low pressure systems off the atlantic on a strong jet-stream - excellent for beachcoming down south as surges are likely to occur.
This winter so far has seen a higher frequency of north or north-westerly, sometimes even north-easterly, meaning colder weather and generally less rainfall, and wintry precipitation.
The good news for you is, after a cold weekend and beginning of next week, the atlantic jet seems to strengthen and the possibilities of milder, windier, westerly driven conditions are likely to occur by next weekend (20th-21st)
Not nailed on by any means but the atlantic will get its act together at some point - just a case of when | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
