| | | re: Signal Crayfish rush i dont believe that the signal has made it down as far as bristol yet but im sure they have been reported in this thread and others in gloucester, i believe they are in the gravel pits around reading, these would be your closest area's. if anyone has any more info it would be nice to hear, also would i be right in saying that about now the water temp is dropping, do they hybernate or just become inactive over the winter months ?? |

No, I don't think you are doing anything wrong - there appears to be a glitch and there is no English name for anything other the native crayfish. But type leniusculus into the search box and it will bring up the map and other stuff.

| | | re: Signal Crayfish I emailed the NBN Gateway and they tell me that the nameserver for the Crustacea is not complete, which is why it doesn't recognise "Signal Crayfish". It'll be fixed by the end of the year (they do have a lot of jobs to do to maintain the Gateway!). Meanwhile the scientific names will work and these can be found on the web in various places - I'll try and find a good site and post it.

| | | re: Signal Crayfish It's quicker to type out the names than to find them all together on the web!
Austropotamobius pallipes White-clawed Crayfish
Astacus leptodactylus Narrow-clawed Crayfish, Turkish Crayfish
Astacus astacus Noble Crayfish
Pacifastacus leniusculus Signal Crayfish, Pacific Crayfish
Procambarus clarkii Red-swamp Crayfish, Louisiana Crayfish
Orconectes limosus Spiny-cheek Crayfish, American Crayfish
There may be other English names, of course.

| | | re: Signal Crayfish Hey NotBrazil !
Just spoke to John Shannon (Dales Fisheries Officer) who says there will be no licences issued on his patch as the Wharfe still has significant(?) stocks of native crayfish
Watch out for that £2500 fine mate
Might be an idea to let the powers that be know about the extent of signals you saw tho. (under an alias perhaps)
Where on the Dibb did you manage to get to 6 meters ? I live by it and it's not very deep at all ? |

| | | re: Signal Crayfish Hi,
Been tempted several times to try for them, but, filling in the form was offputting, especially as I've no idea whether there are any in the gravel pits or river Thames nearby, any easy way to tell if there's any on my doorstep apart from getting in with them.
Websites suggest that Berkshire is innundated with them, but I haven't seen anything to suggest that they're in the gravel pits as the bottom is covered with Canadian pond weed.
