Froglets have left home

Hello In march this year we had about 120 tadpoles in the tank in the kitchen , after about 2 months we made them a small wildlife pond near the bigger pond they all hatched out which felt like 500 hundred froglets leaping the entire garden, and now theyve all left ive seen some in the main pond and around the logs and grass only about a inch long . We do have a Grass Snake around my guess hes had a fair few meals from them, I suppose out of 120 frogs would you say about 20 would make it to adult? We are digging a bigger pond in the autumn hopefully approx 15 X 15 and probaly keep the pond we have now for a wildlife pond, weve got the room and my hubby is well into ponds and not too much into grass cutting so that will be his project , and the wildlife pond mine, his and hers suit well in this family hes got his shed ive got mine same with all the tools , cant argue that way can you.? As its his pond I suggest he dig it out shei.

That's the spirit

I think out of 120 tadpoles, you'd be doing very, very well if as many as 20 survive - but fingers crossed

Lucky you - a Grass Snake

Try not to plant a lilac tree in the new pond Shie..

Your garden is certainly getting the wildlife for saying its relatively new.

As long as all the wildlife know who's pond to avoid then they will be fine..Let the Grass Snake eat HIS fish.

Re: Froglets have left home

I had to laugh tonight while watering the shrubs and trees with a hose pipe out of a lot of bushes out pop another frog then another then another they were hopping about everywhere, ive never seen so many frogs in one watering session, alot of them were more than 4 inches long so they couldnt have been the ones that hatched indoors in march which I put in the wildlife pond in may. . shei

Re: Froglets have left home

Well my tadpoles have been turning into weenie baby frogs over the last few weeks.............I no longer have a lawn in my back garden I daren't mow it as they are all over the place!

I'm going to have to take the plunge in a couple of weeks time before the grass gets so long the lawnmower won't be able to cope! But won't do near the edges, will leave that so they still have somewhere to hide

Re: Froglets have left home

hi shei111 you will find that your froglets once left the pond will go all around the garden and hide in log piles and under stones
out of 1,000 tadpoles you can get one that will become a breeding adult frog
if you get more thats great tadpoles and froglets are prey to many things
tadpoles will get eaten by diving bettles and newts and frogs,
once they are froglets , rats mice , birds frogs and Grass Snakes will eat them
i help mine by adding many stick piles and rocks and stones in the garden and never use any slug pellets or chemicals the rest is up tro them

how big is the Grass Snake if fully grown he will take fish and adult frogs as well. pete the pond sounds like you have a great garden.

Re: Froglets have left home

Well, my next door neighbours were in hysterics at my attempts to mow my back lawn! I hadn't realised just how many baby frogs there were, so was constantly stopping the mower and gently shooing them into the flower beds, one even shot into the shed for cover so had to rescue him

My areas of long grass have expanded considerably, have to give the little critters every chance!

Still, wouldn't change anything, I can't believe what a difference a year has made in my garden. What with the new pond and doing a lot of planting for butterflies and bees, there is always something to watch

Had my first dragonfly on Saturday, I think it had just hatched out, don't know much about them, will try and google today to find out what type it was.

Oh that was easy, went to the reference section on here - it was a blue tailed damselfly. Problably very common but it gave me a big thrill!
