| | | Unknown Nymph?? I was looking for things to photograph in our garden pond when I saw, what looked like a piece of plant, moving from weed to weed. On closer inspection I could see legs sticking out...any idea what it is? Its the long green thing. Apologies for the bad photograph:
Many thanks

| | | Re: Unknown Nymph?? Judging from the case it appears to be the caddisfly larva Triaenodes bicolor. The green spiralled vegetated case of this kind, as far as I am aware, is characteristic to the species. The larva has two fringes of long hairs on its posterior legs that it uses to swim through the water column. The species is found in still and slow flowing water bodies among vegetation. It is widespread and common throughout the UK.
Cheers,
Drew.

Thank you for the ID. I can confirm they are in our fishpond which has a slow running waterfall. So glad we have then in the pond together with other little beasties lol.
