Re: What is this in my pond?

What sort of camera are you using? Look for a logo of a flower - this is the Macro, or close-up, button. It should focus a lot closer.

As far as the insect goes, I thought maybe Great diving beetle?

EDIT: OK, I've just read the description - mosquitoe larvae?

Smile Re: What is this in my pond?

Definately, a good pic. The last time I tried photographing something under the water surface - well, it wasn't as clear as yours!

Forget the GDB suggestion - I would say a nymph - mosquitoe maybe?

How many are there, and what size?

More by luck than judgement with the camera i think

I havn't had an SLR camera very long.

Its a Nikon D40 with a 55-300mm Sigma lens attached which i can only use on Macro with that camera so it means a lot of jiggery pokery but i'm pleased with some of the results i've been getting and still need to read the manual properly

There are quite a few of these in the pond

They have like a jelly like oval outer casing and the green yellow worm like creature in the middle wriggles around alot as if to help it move through the water must be about a cemtimetre long perhaps?

Re: What is this in my pond?

Can you maybe look at some google photos and try that way rather than fish one out? If I get my Id books out now - things will come crashing down (all rather precarious here at mo - with no shelving yet!!) and i'll wake somebody up!

Re: What is this in my pond?

hmm. this looks like a rat tailed maggot - bear in mind their breathing tubes can extend / retract... There is something called Phantom midge lava which mainly hang round at the bottom of a pond and look like a horrizontal wiggling mosquito lava.

I am still going with rat tailed maggot
