| | | Cuttlefish Washed up on the beach at Slapton amiid the fragments of Kelp were a pair of Cuttlefish bones, not the little ones you would put into a Budgie cage, but
a pair that would have given a quite large Cuttlefish. The bones were over
200mm, is there a formula to work out the actual size?

Not sure about an actual formula for calculation of size from bones but DEFRA do have calculations for working out the live weight of fish from fillets, etc, so they may have something to do this.
A rough estimate would suggest that those animals were around 12 ins when alive. A good size but not record breakers. On average, they live around 2 years, continually growing then die after spawning. With higher water temperatures last winter and plenty of feed around they are probably growing a bit faster this year.
Slapton is on the edge of the main English Channel spawning ground. the majority spawn further eastwards. But we do occasionally find eggs on ropes and crabpots in this area.
Large numbers of cuttlefish are caught in the Channel and landed at Brixham. |

| | | Re: Cuttlefish A bit like a tough squid! Most go for export to the continent. Perhaps they have different ways of cooking them. I have heard that you are supposed to use the ink to make a sauce.
Personally, I think the best option is to use them as bait to catch something worth eating. |
