weird white/grey thing in pond

hello,

just pottered off to the pond, and saw a weird and bizarre thing.. i hope someone can help me.. it was about an inch long. grey in colour, with what looks like white lightning stripes down it's body... it was munching along the side of the pond, but it had a long tendril attached to it's bum connected to the surface of the water... im guessing this is how it's breathing???

any ideas what it is,, here's a blurring photo,, sorry couldn't get a clearer image...

also just noticed red worms,, about 1cm long,, what are these...

this is my first pond, so i'm a newbie

Your little red worms are probably bloodworms.

rat tailed maggot is certainly a good name,.. i've two of them chomping away in my pond... i guess its good that im attracting life....???
i did see one of the adults flying around, but i wasn't sure what they were..

and I hope something big and exciting will come and much on the blood worms,,,, maybe a frog will be inticed..
