"A rare fish dating back to the Ice Age has been declared extinct at one of its few historic homes in Britain.

However, the vendace is now thriving at a new site in Loch Skene in Dumfries and Galloway after its spawn was introduced there in the 1990s."

Yes I heard of the Vendace. It lives in deep cold lakes like Bassenthwaite.
It is a white fish looks a bit like a herring.

Vendace still get caught occasionaly from Mill Loch in Lochmaben, so they are not so extinct! People just did not realise what they had caught at the time, I did!

I think they are in Derwentwater also Bassenthwaite both suffer from pollution from the nearby A66 (seem to remember reading about it somewhere new scientist mag??)
