| | | Dead Ray, Skate? Sorry it's a bit morbid this one. Found the remains of some sort of fish on the beach at Birkdale, Sefton Coast, Merseyside last week. Does anyone know what it could be? The weird smiley face reminded me of the Rays I've seen but it didn't have the two wing-like fins attached only short ones so I thought maybe a Dogfish Scyliorhinus canicula?

| | | Re: Dead Ray, Skate? What length (roughly) were the remains Black? It looks to be either a Lesser Spotted Dogfish or Bull Huss (Greater Spotted Dogfish)...any idea of size you can give would help determine which species it is...

| | | Re: Dead Ray, Skate? What is 70 cms in English? Going by the colour of what is left of the skin I would say that it looks too grey for any of the spotted dogs or the black dog (bull huss). So I think Spurdog, the genuine rock salmon. If so it should have smooth skin and a nasty looking spike at the base of the dorsal fin. Alternatively a small tope.
If I could see it, particularly the other side and fins, then ID would be a lot easier. However, as the others have said, definitely a breed of dogfish. |

| | | Re: Dead Ray, Skate? I wouldnt go too much off the colour considering how rotted the carcass looks, but Smoothhound and Spurdog are possibilities too..

| | | Re: Dead Ray, Skate? To be honest, I think there are a lot of possibilities with this one. It's definately a small shark rather than a ray, but past that it's hard to tell. Some kind of dogfish is a possibility, but it could also be a smoothhound of some kind or a spurdog. The colour of the fins looks more like a type of smoothhound, but it's obviously well decayed and without a better view of its back and fins, it's hard to say anything very concrete about it. 70cm would put it in the range for just about any native shark I've seen too!
Sorry I can't be more help
